192.168.2.1 is where Belkin routers, Telekom Speedport routers in Germany and the Bell and Virgin Plus modems in Canada keep their settings page. Older Edimax and SMC Barricade routers use it too. It is a private address, so it only opens on a phone or computer connected to that router. What you type next depends on who made the box, and on several of them there is no username at all.
- Who uses it
- Belkin, Telekom Speedport, Bell, Virgin Plus, Edimax and SMC.
- Easier to type
- Speedport routers open at speedport.ip. Bell points customers to bell.ca/mymodem, and each Virgin Plus modem answers on its own name.
- Username
- Usually none. Belkin, Speedport, Bell and Virgin Plus ask for a password only.
- Password
- On a Bell hub it is the serial number on the back. Virgin Plus uses admin. A Belkin often has none.
How to log in at 192.168.2.1
- Connect to the router. Join its Wi-Fi or plug in a network cable. On a phone, switch mobile data off for a minute, and turn off any VPN, so the request goes to the router and not out to the internet.
- Type the address. Enter
http://192.168.2.1in the address bar and press Enter. Typed into a search box, it only returns pages about the address. - Enter the password from the label. Most of these routers show a single password box. The table below says what goes in it for each maker.
- Change it if it was a shared default. A password like admin is printed in manuals anyone can read. This page included.

Login by maker and provider
The shared defaults belong to the older kit. Newer boxes from Bell and Telekom have a password of their own, printed on the unit, and the label always beats anything you read online.
| Maker or provider | Devices | Username | Password |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bell | Home Hub 3000 | None asked | The serial number on the sticker on the back |
| Bell | Home Hub 4000, Giga Hub | None asked | The serial number on the back, also shown on the front screen under Modem Management |
| Virgin Plus | Vincent, Valérie, Steve | None asked | admin, unless it has been changed |
| Telekom | Speedport | None asked | The device password on the label underneath. Many older ones use 0000 |
| Belkin | Most home routers | None asked | Usually none: the page simply opens |
| Edimax | Older broadband routers | admin |
1234 |
| SMC | Barricade routers | None, admin or smc |
smcadmin on most models |
The names you can type instead
Several of these routers answer on a name as well as the number, which is easier on a phone keyboard.
- Telekom Speedport:
speedport.ipopens the same page as 192.168.2.1. - Bell:
bell.ca/mymodemtakes you to the hub’s settings from a device on its Wi-Fi. - Virgin Plus:
http://vincent,http://valerieorhttp://steve, after the name of your modem. - Belkin:
http://routerworks on most Belkin home routers.
Is my router really on 192.168.2.1?
Probably not, if it is not one of the brands above. Most routers sit on 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, and a guess costs more time than checking. The default gateway of a connected device is the router’s real address. On Windows, run ipconfig. On an iPhone, open Settings, then Wi-Fi, and tap the (i) beside your network. The 192.168.1.1 guide has the steps for Mac, Android and Linux.
Other common router addresses
If your router is not on 192.168.2.1, it is probably on one of these. Addresses with a guide of their own are linked.

192.168.2.1 | Belkin and some Canadian providers | Belkin, Edimax, SMC, Deutsche Telekom, Bell, Virgin Plus |

192.168.2.l and other typing mistakes
The address is four numbers and three dots. 192.168.2.l, ending in a letter l, never loads. Neither does 192.168.21 with a dot missing, or 192.168.1.2 with the numbers swapped round. That last one is a real address, but on most networks it belongs to a phone or laptop, not the router.
It still will not open
- A second router or mesh behind it. If a mesh system plugs into your Bell or Speedport box, your devices get their address from the mesh. The box in front is only reachable through it, or with a cable plugged straight into it.
- A guest network. Guest Wi-Fi is normally kept away from the settings pages on purpose (what a guest network can reach). Join the main network.
- The address was changed. Someone may have moved the router to another address. The default gateway always shows the current one.
For the less obvious causes, see why the router page will not load when the internet works fine.
The password is refused
Start with the label, then remember that the label only ever shows the original. If someone set their own password since, the way back is a reset.
- Bell Home Hub 3000: hold the Reset button on the side for at least 30 seconds, until the light flashes red five times.
- Bell Home Hub 4000 and Giga Hub: on the front, press the down arrow, scroll to Reset to factory default, choose Yes and press OK. Bell hubs can also email or text you their passwords with the recovery button, but only if that was set up beforehand.
- Virgin Plus Vincent: the same front-screen menu: Reset to factory default, Yes, OK. Wait until all three lights are white.
- Belkin, Edimax and SMC: press the reset button on the back with a paperclip while the router is switched on. How long to hold it varies by model, so check the maker’s page for yours.
A reset also puts the Wi-Fi name and password back to the ones on the label, so every device has to join again. How to find your router password covers the options to try first.
Questions people ask
Is the admin password the same as the Wi-Fi password?
No. A Bell hub’s sticker carries both, and the admin one is the serial number. A Virgin Plus modem’s admin password is admin, which no sensible Wi-Fi key would be. If it is the Wi-Fi password you are after, here is how to find it.
Can I open 192.168.2.1 on my phone?
Yes, while the phone is on the router’s Wi-Fi. On mobile data it reaches nothing, because the address only exists inside your own network.
Can I reach 192.168.2.1 from outside the house?
No. Every home with one of these routers has its own 192.168.2.1, and none of them can be reached over the internet. A website offering to log in to it for you cannot do it.
