AVM Default Router Passwords

This page lists 2 confirmed default credentials for AVM equipment, covering 2 models.

Entries are reachable over http. All of these entries use a protocol that sends the password in clear text, so use them on a trusted network and change the password once you are in.

On most AVM equipment the admin password is printed on the device itself, on its label or settings card. If it has been changed and you cannot recall it, a reset returns it to the printed one. Know a AVM model we are missing? Add it.

About AVM

AVM is the Berlin company behind the FRITZ!Box routers sold across Germany and supplied by internet providers in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. Its support site is now fritz.com.

Reaching the login page

The admin page on most AVM units answers at http://192.168.178.1, or at fritz.box if the router is handling your DNS. If that address does not load, the router is whatever your computer lists as its default gateway — ipconfig on Windows or ipconfig getoption en0 router on a Mac will tell you.

The steps, and what to try when the page will not load, are in our 192.168.178.1 login guide. The login asks only for the FRITZ!Box password printed on the type label underneath, which is different on every box. It is not the Wi-Fi key on the same label. If fritz.box will not open, the emergency address http://169.254.1.1 works from a computer on one of its LAN ports.

What the AVM defaults look like

None of them ask for a username; the field is left empty. On 2 entries the password is unique to each unit and printed on its label. All of them are reached over a protocol that puts the password on the wire in clear text, so work from a machine on the same wired network rather than across the internet, and change the password once you are in.

If the AVM password has already been changed

Unplug the FRITZ!Box, plug it back in after a minute, open fritz.box within 10 minutes, click Forgot your password? and then Restore factory settings (FRITZ! knowledge base).

The catch with an ISP-supplied unit is that a reset also clears the broadband credentials, and on some lines the router will not reconnect until those are re-entered. Find them before you press anything, or be ready to ring the provider.
