192.168.8.1: how to log in to your 4G or 5G router

A person typing on a laptop with a web browser open

192.168.8.1 is the login address of a lot of 4G and 5G kit: Huawei’s pocket Mobile WiFi and its home CPE routers, GL.iNet’s travel routers, and the hubs mobile networks such as Three, DITO and Zong hand out. The page lives on the device itself. It opens on anything connected to that device’s Wi-Fi, even when the mobile signal is down.

Who uses it
Huawei Mobile WiFi and CPE, GL.iNet, and hubs from Three in the UK, DITO in the Philippines and Zong in Pakistan.
Password
On most of these, printed on the device’s label. GL.iNet has none until you set one.
Not the Wi-Fi password
Huawei is explicit that the management password and the Wi-Fi password are different.

Three’s hubs can also be on 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

How to log in at 192.168.8.1

  1. Join the device’s Wi-Fi. On a phone, turn mobile data off for a moment so the request goes to the hub and not out over the phone’s own connection. Turn off any VPN too.
  2. Type the address. Enter http://192.168.8.1 in the address bar and press Enter. A search box only returns pages about it.
  3. Find the password on the device. Huawei prints it on the nameplate, on the bottom of a Mobile WiFi. Three prints it on the base or back of the hub. DITO puts it on the product label.
  4. Sign in. A new GL.iNet router asks you to create a password instead, at least five characters long.

Login by device

Most of these devices have no shared default. The label on each unit is the answer, and this table says where to look. Carrier versions of Huawei devices can use a different address or password, so the label beats anything printed online.

Device Username Password
Huawei Mobile WiFi and 4G/5G CPE The management password is on the nameplate (bottom of a Mobile WiFi)
GL.iNet routers None asked None until you set one at first start
Three 5G Hub MC801A, MC888 and 4G Hub MF286D (ZTE) On the base of the hub On the base of the hub
Three 5G Hub NR5103E (Zyxel) None asked On the back of the hub
DITO 5G Home WiFi None asked On the product label, different on every modem
Zong 4G devices admin admin, until you change it under Settings, Device Settings

On a GL.iNet router the password you set also works for SSH as root and for the LuCI pages at 192.168.8.1/cgi-bin/luci. There is no separate one.

Three: 192.168.8.1, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

Three lists all three addresses for its home broadband hubs. Try 192.168.8.1 first, then the other two. If none of them opens, the default gateway on a connected device shows the right one; the 192.168.1.1 guide explains how to find it on a phone or computer.

192.168.8.l and other typing mistakes

The usual one is a letter l where a 1 belongs, as in 192.168.8.l. A space instead of a dot, as in 192.168 l 8.1, is another. Neither loads. The address is 192.168.8.1: four numbers, three dots.

Forgot the password you set

  • DITO 5G Home WiFi: hold the reset button for about seven seconds to go back to factory settings, then use the label again.
  • Zong: a forgotten password needs a hard reset, which brings back admin and admin.
  • Huawei: if both the management and Wi-Fi passwords are lost, Huawei’s advice is a factory reset. It clears the setup, so you set the device up again afterwards.
  • Three: the login on the base of the hub is the original one. Three’s app works with the hub as well.

A reset also brings back the Wi-Fi name and password from the label, so every phone and laptop has to join again. Before going that far, how to find your router password covers the other options.

Questions people ask

Is 192.168.8.1 the same on every mobile router?

No. It is a private address, so each device has its own 192.168.8.1 on its own network. Some mobile routers, including some of Three’s hubs, use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 instead.

Is the 192.168.8.1 password my Wi-Fi password?

No. The label usually carries both, and Huawei spells out that the management password is not the one for joining the Wi-Fi. If you need the Wi-Fi one, here is how to find it.

Why does 192.168.8.1 not open on my laptop?

The laptop has to be on the device’s Wi-Fi or cabled to it. On another network, at home or at work, 192.168.8.1 points somewhere else or nowhere.
