D-Link Default Router Passwords

D-Link default password: the short answer

Most D-Link routers log in with the username admin and no password: leave the password box empty. That is D-Link’s own default for its DIR routers, and a factory reset puts it back.

Login address
192.168.0.1 or http://dlinkrouter.local
Username
admin
Password
Leave it blank
Forgot the password?
Press the reset button on the base with a paperclip for about 7 seconds.

How to log in to a D-Link router

  1. Connect to the router. D-Link suggests a network cable for first setup, so the connection does not drop while you change wireless settings. Wi-Fi works too if you stay close to the router.
  2. Open the login page. Type 192.168.0.1 or http://dlinkrouter.local into the address bar, not into a search engine.
  3. Sign in. Enter admin as the username and leave the password empty. Then set a password of your own.

These steps follow D-Link’s own login guide. Older and DSL models vary more, which is why the table below lists each model with its own login and source.

About D-Link

D-Link is a Taiwanese manufacturer of routers, switches, access points and IP cameras. The D-Link records here run across the DI-, DSL- and DWL- lines.

Reaching the login page

The admin page on most D-Link units answers at http://192.168.0.1, or at dlinkrouter.local if the router is handling your DNS. If that address does not load, the router is whatever your computer lists as its default gateway — ipconfig on Windows or ipconfig getoption en0 router on a Mac will tell you.

Most D-Link routers ship with the username admin and no password at all, so leaving the password field empty is worth trying before anything else.

What the D-Link defaults look like

admin is the username on 32 of the 45 entries. 5 of them ask for no username at all. 22 of them shipped with no password at all.

Where one is set, admin comes up most often, on 17 entries. There are 6 different passwords across the D-Link set, so check your exact model rather than assuming. 31 of them are reached over a protocol that puts the password on the wire in clear text, so work from a machine on the same wired network rather than across the internet, and change the password once you are in.

If the D-Link password has already been changed

With the router on, press the reset button in the small hole on the base with a paperclip for about seven seconds. The power light turns orange while it restarts (D-Link support FAQ).

A reset clears more than the password. The Wi-Fi name and key go back to what is printed on the label, port forwards and firewall rules are discarded, and any static addressing is lost. Photograph the settings pages first — it takes two minutes and saves an evening.

D-Link password questions

I forgot my D-Link router password. What now?

Reset the router. With it switched on, push the end of a paperclip into the small reset hole on the base and hold it for about seven seconds. The power light turns orange while the router restarts. When it stops blinking, the settings are back to factory defaults: log in as admin and leave the password blank. D-Link’s reset guide has the full steps.

What is the default D-Link username and password?

On D-Link’s DIR routers the username is admin and there is no password. Some older D-Link models used admin as the password too; the table above lists each one.

Does a reset change the firmware?

No. D-Link says a reset returns every setting to factory defaults but leaves the firmware version as it is.

dlinkrouter.local will not open

Type 192.168.0.1 instead, and check that your device is connected to the D-Link router by cable or Wi-Fi. If neither works, the router’s address is the default gateway your computer shows in its network settings.

What is my D-Link Wi-Fi password?

Until it is changed, it is the one printed on the router’s label, and a reset puts it back. Our Wi-Fi password guide shows how to read it from a laptop or phone that is already connected.
