TP-Link Default Router Passwords

TP-Link default password: the short answer

Most TP-Link routers sold since about 2019 have no default password. The first time you log in, the router asks you to create one, and there is no username to type. Older TP-Link routers, and some of its 4G models, still use admin for both the username and the password.

Login address
tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1. Some older models answer on 192.168.1.1.
Current Archer routers
No default. You create a password at the first login; only a password is asked.
Older routers
Username admin, password admin, pre-filled on the login page.
Forgot the password?
Hold the Reset button for more than 10 seconds to go back to the defaults on the label.

How to log in to a TP-Link router

  1. Connect to the router. Use a network cable, or join its Wi-Fi. On a new or reset router, the Wi-Fi name and password are on the label underneath. The login page works without an internet connection.
  2. Open the login page. Type tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1 into the browser’s address bar, not into a search box.
  3. Get past the privacy warning. Your browser may say the connection is not private. TP-Link says this is expected, because the router uses its own certificate. Choose Advanced, then Proceed.
  4. Sign in. On a new router, create an admin password. Otherwise enter the one you set. If the router is linked to a TP-Link ID, you can sign in with that account instead.

These steps follow TP-Link’s own login guide. You can also manage most TP-Link routers from the TP-Link Tether app.

About TP-Link

TP-Link is the largest consumer Wi-Fi vendor by unit volume, selling the Archer, Deco and TL- lines. The TP-Link records here run across the Archer and Omada lines.

Reaching the login page

The admin page on most TP-Link units answers at http://192.168.0.1, or at tplinkwifi.net if the router is handling your DNS. If that address does not load, the router is whatever your computer lists as its default gateway — ipconfig on Windows or ipconfig getoption en0 router on a Mac will tell you.

The steps, and what to try when the page will not load, are in our 192.168.0.1 login guide. Older TL- models answer on 192.168.1.1. Since roughly 2019 TP-Link has asked you to create a password on first boot rather than shipping with admin/admin.

What the TP-Link defaults look like

admin is the username on 6 of the 11 entries. 2 of them ask for no username at all. Where one is set, admin comes up most often, on 6 entries.

3 of them are reached over a protocol that puts the password on the wire in clear text, so work from a machine on the same wired network rather than across the internet, and change the password once you are in.

If the TP-Link password has already been changed

Hold the Reset or WPS/Reset button for ten seconds until the LEDs blink.

A reset clears more than the password. The Wi-Fi name and key go back to what is printed on the label, port forwards and firewall rules are discarded, and any static addressing is lost. Photograph the settings pages first — it takes two minutes and saves an evening.

TP-Link password questions

I forgot my TP-Link router password. What now?

TP-Link has no way to recover it, so you reset the router. With the router switched on, press and hold the Reset button (or the combined WPS/Reset button) for more than 10 seconds, and let go when the SYS light changes from a slow flash to a quick flash. The router restarts with the login and Wi-Fi details printed on its label, and you set it up again. If you can still get into the settings, the same reset is under Advanced, System Tools, Backup and Restore, Factory Restore. TP-Link’s reset guide has pictures of where the button sits.

Is admin / admin still the TP-Link default?

Only on older models, where the login page opens with admin already filled in. Current TP-Link firmware asks you to create a password instead, so if you see a “create password” screen there is no default to look up.

What is the TP-Link router username?

Current Archer routers do not ask for one, only a password. Older routers and range extenders use admin. Omada access points and switches also start with admin, and the access points make you change it straight away.

What is my TP-Link Wi-Fi password?

Until someone changes it, it is the wireless password printed on the router’s label, beside the network name. A reset puts it back to that. If you are already connected on a laptop or phone, our Wi-Fi password guide shows how to read it from there.

tplinkwifi.net will not open

Type 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1 on an older router, instead. Turn off any VPN, try a network cable rather than Wi-Fi, or try another browser. Your device has to be connected to the TP-Link router for either address to work.

What does the WPS/Reset button do?

On TP-Link routers with a combined button, a press of under five seconds starts WPS pairing, and holding it for 10 seconds or more resets the router to factory settings.
