Linksys Default Router Passwords

Linksys default password: the short answer

Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers use the password admin with no username until someone changes it. Older Linksys routers also leave the username blank and use admin as the password.

Login address
https://192.168.1.1 or myrouter.local
Username
None: leave it blank
Password
admin on a router that has not been set up
Forgot the password?
Factory reset with the Reset button, then set the router up again.

How to log in to a Linksys router

  1. Open a browser on a computer or tablet connected to the Linksys router.
  2. Go to the router. Type https://192.168.1.1 or myrouter.local and press Enter. If neither loads, check the router’s IP address in your computer’s network settings.
  3. Enter the router password and choose Sign In. On a router that has not been set up, it is admin. If a Linksys cloud sign-in page appears instead, choose “For local access, click here”.

These steps follow Linksys’s own guide to the web interface. Newer Linksys mesh systems are usually set up and managed in the Linksys app.

About Linksys

Linksys made the WRT54G, the router that launched third-party firmware, and has passed from Cisco to Belkin to Foxconn since. The Linksys records here run across the WRT-, RTP-, WAG- and WAP- lines.

Reaching the login page

The admin page on most Linksys units answers at http://192.168.1.1, or at myrouter.local if the router is handling your DNS. If that address does not load, the router is whatever your computer lists as its default gateway — ipconfig on Windows or ipconfig getoption en0 router on a Mac will tell you.

On the classic BEFSR and WRT models the username is left blank and only a password is required. Later Smart Wi-Fi models replaced the local login with a cloud account.

What the Linksys defaults look like

admin is the username on 11 of the 23 entries. 10 of them ask for no username at all. 3 of them shipped with no password at all.

Where one is set, admin comes up most often, on 19 entries. 15 of them are reached over a protocol that puts the password on the wire in clear text, so work from a machine on the same wired network rather than across the internet, and change the password once you are in.

If the Linksys password has already been changed

There is a recessed reset button on the back or underneath that needs a straightened paperclip. Hold it in for thirty seconds with the unit powered on. Let go when the lights change pattern, and give it a couple of minutes to come back up.

A reset clears more than the password. The Wi-Fi name and key go back to what is printed on the label, port forwards and firewall rules are discarded, and any static addressing is lost. Photograph the settings pages first — it takes two minutes and saves an evening.

Linksys password questions

I forgot my Linksys router password. What now?

Linksys says that if no password works, you need to do a physical factory reset with the Reset button on the router and then set it up again. After the reset, the router password goes back to admin.

What is the Linksys router username?

There is none. Linksys Smart Wi-Fi routers only ask for the router password, and the older classic models leave the username field blank too.

Is the router password the same as my Wi-Fi password?

No. Linksys points out that the router password opens the settings and the Wi-Fi password joins the network. For the Wi-Fi one, see our Wi-Fi password guide.

What can I change the password to?

Linksys asks for at least 10 characters, with upper and lower case letters, a number and a special character. The setting is under Connectivity, Basic, Router Password.

myrouter.local will not open

Use https://192.168.1.1 instead, and check that your device is connected to the Linksys router. Linksys also suggests keeping the router’s firmware up to date to avoid access problems.
