Most Proxmox equipment has no factory admin password: you create one the first time you set it up. If it has been forgotten, a reset takes the device back to that first-time setup. Know a Proxmox model we are missing? Add it.

About Proxmox

The entries are logged as software appliances and management platforms. 2 distinct Proxmox models are covered.

Reaching the login page

Point a browser at whatever your computer reports as its default gateway. On Windows that is the Default Gateway line from ipconfig; on macOS, Network settings shows it under the active connection.

What the Proxmox defaults look like

Usernames vary; root (realm: Linux PAM) is the one that appears most, on a single entry. On 2 entries there is no factory password; it is set when the device is first set up.

If the Proxmox password has already been changed

There is a recessed reset button on the back or underneath that needs a straightened paperclip. Hold it in for thirty seconds with the unit powered on. Let go when the lights change pattern, and give it a couple of minutes to come back up.

A reset clears more than the password. The Wi-Fi name and key go back to what is printed on the label, port forwards and firewall rules are discarded, and any static addressing is lost. Photograph the settings pages first — it takes two minutes and saves an evening.
