NETGEAR default password: the short answer
The default NETGEAR router login is username admin and password password, both in lower case. Older NETGEAR models used 1234 as the password. Newer routers make you change it during first setup, so the default only works on a new router or one that has just been reset.
- Login address
- routerlogin.net for Nighthawk and most routers, orbilogin.com for Orbi.
- Username
adminon every model- Password
passwordon current models,1234on older ones- Forgot the password?
- Use NETGEAR’s password recovery, or hold Reset for about 15 seconds.
How to log in to a NETGEAR router
- Connect to the router. Join its Wi-Fi or plug in a network cable. The login page works without an internet connection.
- Open the login page. Type
routerlogin.netinto the address bar, ororbilogin.comfor an Orbi system. - Sign in. On a new or reset router, enter admin and password. The router then asks you to choose your own password and two security questions, which you will need if you ever forget it.
The defaults above are from NETGEAR’s own list of default passwords.

About NETGEAR
NETGEAR sells home and small-business networking equipment, and has done since it was spun out of Bay Networks in 1996. The NETGEAR records here run across the MR-, ReadyNAS, DG-, FR- and GSM- lines.
Reaching the login page
The admin page on most NETGEAR units answers at http://192.168.0.1, or at routerlogin.net if the router is handling your DNS. If that address does not load, the router is whatever your computer lists as its default gateway — ipconfig on Windows or ipconfig getoption en0 router on a Mac will tell you.
Older NETGEAR units answer on 192.168.0.1; some DSL models in the DG and DM lines use 192.168.1.1 instead.
What the NETGEAR defaults look like
admin is the username on 32 of the 42 entries. 6 of them ask for no username at all. 3 of them shipped with no password at all.
Where one is set, password comes up most often, on 24 entries. There are 8 different passwords across the NETGEAR set, so check your exact model rather than assuming. 31 of them are reached over a protocol that puts the password on the wire in clear text, so work from a machine on the same wired network rather than across the internet, and change the password once you are in.
If the NETGEAR password has already been changed
Press and hold the Reset button on the back or side with a straightened paperclip for about 15 seconds (NETGEAR support). Try NETGEAR password recovery first: enter a wrong login three times, then the serial number and your security answers.
A reset clears more than the password. The Wi-Fi name and key go back to what is printed on the label, port forwards and firewall rules are discarded, and any static addressing is lost. Photograph the settings pages first — it takes two minutes and saves an evening.

NETGEAR password questions
I forgot my NETGEAR router password. What now?
Try NETGEAR’s password recovery first, because it keeps your settings. Go to routerlogin.net (or orbilogin.com) and enter the wrong login three times. The Router Password Reset screen appears: type the router’s serial number, answer the two security questions you chose at setup, and pick a new password. NETGEAR’s guide has the details.
If that does not work, reset the router: press and hold the Reset button on the back or side with a straightened paperclip for about 15 seconds. That deletes every setting, including the Wi-Fi name and password, and you set the router up again with admin and password.
Is the NETGEAR password case-sensitive?
Yes. NETGEAR says both the username and the password are case-sensitive, so type admin and password in lower case.
Is the admin password the same as my Wi-Fi password?
No. NETGEAR treats three logins separately: the admin password opens the router’s settings, the Wi-Fi password joins the network, and a MyNETGEAR account is your login to NETGEAR’s own services. For the Wi-Fi one, see our Wi-Fi password guide.
routerlogin.net will not open
Your device has to be connected to the NETGEAR router for the address to work. Try the router’s IP address instead, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, or the default gateway your computer shows in its network settings.
